Braised Duck

Zan Ji Ducks sells the usual braised duck and braised dishes. Shown above is their braised duck rice with added braised pork belly, braised tofu and braised egg.

The rice used here is flavoured yam rice with its brown colouring coming from cooking the rice with braised sauce added. Flavours are decent but the rice is too soft and can’t exactly taste any yam bits.

The braised duck has meaty and moist flesh, tastes fairly ordinary and is a bit on the tough and chewy side. As for the braised pork belly slices, it has nice fatty parts giving it a soft texture. It has nice savoury meaty tastes. The braised pork is definitely better than the braised duck here.

The braised tofu is soft but quite tasteless. Likewise for the braised egg, can’t really taste any braised flavours. The accompanying bowl of soup has very light flavours as well. As for the chilli paste, it is spicy with very nice dried shrimp flavourings and mixes really well with the rice and braised dishes. This is probably the saving grace for an otherwise average tasting dish. To be very honest, this braised duck rice is barely likeable.
