Ngo Hiang & Fried Mee Hoon

Old Chong Pang Ngoh Hiang Prawn Cracker Bee Hoon is a stall selling an assortment of ngo hiang pieces and fried mee hoon. Chosen here are: fish cake, crispy prawn cracker, water chestnut egg cake, sotong paste you tiao and ngo hiang with a plate of fried mee hoon.

The fish cake is soft and springy with nice flavours. The crispy prawn cracker tastes decent too, with crispy fried prawn on a piece of flaky crispy flour. The water chestnut egg cake is crispy outside and soft inside, nice. The sotong paste you tiao is very crispy with a soft sotong paste filling inside, a bit salty though. As for their signature ngo hiang, it has a very crispy skin wrapping nicely flavoured meat filling that is soft and moist. It is nice.

This plate of ngo hiang comes served with a bland tasting watery chilli dip that has a very faint limey taste. A slice of cucumber and some small onion bits completes it. The fried mee hoon contains some bean sprouts, and is decently flavoured and moist. However its portions are quite small though.

Very honestly, this ngo hiang is rather likeable. It is unfortunate that this stall is dishonest and overcharges. Big thumbs down for that.

Overcharging

There is a lady at the stall and her modus operandi is asking you to hand over $10 SGD to her first. When the order is ready, she will tally up the costs of your order and hand you back the change.

My order and prices is as highlighted in above image:
1x fish cake ($1.50 SGD)
1x crispy prawn cracker ($1.50 SGD)
1x water chestnut egg cake ($1.20 SGD)
1x sotong paste you tiao ($1.20 SGD)
1x ngo hiang ($1.20 SGD)
1x fried mee hoon ($1.00 to $1.50 SGD)
Total = $7.60 to $8.10 SGD, depending on the fried mee hoon portion.

When my order is ready, the lady told me that the amount is just right at $10.00 SGD and I didn’t think too much about it until I started eating and documenting each item. Then I realised that I’ve been overcharged…

BEWARE! Old Chong Pang Ngoh Hiang Prawn Cracker Bee Hoon is a dishonest stall that overcharges! You’ve been warned.
