Nasi Lemak

Hengli Kampung Nasi Lemak Nasi Padang is a Chinese stall that sells both nasi lemak and nasi padang. Shown here is their nasi lemak set which comes with a fried chicken wing, fried egg, ikan bilis and peanuts served with a plate of coconut milk rice. The beef rendang and begedil are extra add ons.

The rice is fairly fragrant with a very faint taste of coconut milk. Not exactly the best nasi around but acceptable. The fried egg is just your regular fried egg. The fried chicken wing has a little bit of crispiness at its edges but it is mostly soft. Fairly moist meat and decently flavoured skin, but quite ordinary though. As for the ikan bilis and peanuts, it is crispy and crunchy and has a slightly sweet taste. Nice! This plate of nasi lemak comes served with a sambal chilli paste on the side with mild flavours of ikan bilis and dried shrimps and a very small hint of sweetness among its spice. Mixes quite well with the rice.

For the extra add ons, the beef rendang is the dry type with hardly any rendang sauce. The beef is rather chewy, but acceptable kind of soft and tender. Its flavours are nice. As for the begedil, the potato filling tastes alright but its fried egg coating is soft and no longer crispy. The begedil is just ordinary and passable.

This nasi lemak is quite decent. However a note of caution for those on a budget. The extra add ons can easily pile up as the prices ain’t exactly pocket-friendly for a hawker stall. Go easy with it.
