Hainanese Chicken Rice

Heng Ji Chicken Rice sells only the white type of hainanese chicken rice. It used to be a very popular chicken rice stall that attracts long queues, but not anymore. Let’s find out why.

This plate of chicken rice comes with slices of chicken meat stacked on top of a plate of flavoured rice and served with cucumber slices and a saucer of chilli sauce. The chicken meat is quite decent, moist and fairly tender. The rice unfortunately is quite a letdown. It is very mildly flavoured and not fragrant at all. It tastes almost like plain white rice that is way too soft. As for the chilli, it is not your usual type of limey chicken rice garlic chilli. This chilli sauce is watery with a mild spicy flavour. Tastes rather nice with the chicken meat.

The hainanese chicken is quite alright and decent, especially when eaten with the chilli dip. The rice is too lightly flavoured and too soft for my liking. This chicken rice is barely likeable. There are definitely better choices out there.
